What is it?

  • NBA China has announced a long-term partnership with Sina Weibo
  • They two organisations will collaborate on broadcasts of NBA China events, behind-the-scenes coverage, real-time short clips, highlights, photos, player interviews and original programming

 

Why do I need to know?

  • The CEO for NBA China, David Shoemaker, commented that social media has transformed the way Chinese fans learn about and watch National Basketball Association games
  • The official NBA Weibo account has 32.78 million followers, and 30 NBA teams have individual accounts with an amassed following of 60 million fans
  • Sina has taken various steps – such as live streaming the Super Bowl, signing a partnership with NFL and now with NBA – to boost engagement and popularity on what seemed like the waning Weibo

Wallace Huo as Officine Panerai’s First Brand Ambassador

What is it?

  • Luxury watch makers Officine Panerai have appointed Wallace Huo as their brand ambassador
  • Huo will not only be brand ambassador for Greater China, but he is also the brand’s first official ambassador globally
  • Officine Panerai has been operating out of Florence since 1860, when it was the city’s first watchmaker’s store

 

Why do I need to know?

  • The Taiwanese actor, singer and producer was named by China Newsweek as one of the most influential people in China in 2015
  • This is a very clear move by the luxury brand to concentrate on the China region and encourage “familiarity among the Chinese on Panerai’s world and values”

Shanghai Predicted To Be The Leading Technology Innovation Hub

What is it?

  • According to a KPMG report, Shanghai is set to overtake Silicon Valley as the world’s leading technology innovation hub over the next four years
  • This is due to the city’s strong presence in financial markets and various hi-tech parks in Pudong district
  • Other factors include new product development, big data analysis capabilities and other internet-based technologies as the country’s top focus for further investment in the next three years (as identified by the KPMG survey)

 

Why do I need to know?

  • China’s 13th Five-Year Plan has identified innovation as one of the five new tenets of the country’s economic and social development
  • In recent years, Shanghai has been keen to develop itself into an innovation-driven centre especially in terms of its high-tech industry, with the gross output value reaching RMB 680.99 billion, or 21.7% of the city’s industry total in 2015
  • It is also expected that Shenzhen – with companies such as Huawei Technologies and Tencent Holdings – will be ranked higher in future surveys as its brands develop and raise the city’s global profile
